BINDER Incubators: Supporting Covid-19 Vaccine Research

"During the cabinet meeting on 11-8, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russia successfully developed the world's first Covid-19 vaccine. It was officially registered under the name Sputnik V, named after the first artificial satellite launched into orbit by the Soviet Union in 1957.

The efficacy of the new vaccine has been approved by Russian health authorities for use in humans, and mass production will commence shortly."

So what is a vaccine? And how are vaccines produced? The following article provides some general information about vaccines:

Vaccines and the vaccine production process:

Vaccines are antigenic preparations derived from pathogenic microorganisms or microorganisms with an antigenic structure similar to pathogenic microorganisms, formulated to ensure necessary safety, inducing the body to produce immunity against pathogens. Vaccines contain weakened or closely resembling versions of the virus (called antigens).

Vaccines are produced using disease-causing viruses or bacteria, but in a form that will not cause harm to the recipient. Instead, the virus or bacterium is weakened, killed, or partially used so that our immune system can develop protective antibodies.

There are various methods for manufacturing vaccines, but the main stages include:

  • Antigen generation: This is the first step in vaccine production; generating the antigen triggers the immune response
  • Antigen release and isolation: The antigen is separated from cells and isolated from proteins and other remnants of the growth medium.
  • Purification: The antigen must be purified to yield a high-purity, high-quality product.
  • Addition of other ingredients:
  • Addition of certain adjuvants: helps enhance the recipient's immune response to a delivered antigen
  • Addition of stabilizers: prolongs shelf life, or preservatives to allow safe multi-dose use when required.
  • Packaging: After the vaccine is filled into vials or syringes, it is sealed with sterile stoppers.

Binder microbiological incubators – Supporting vaccine research:

During the research and production of vaccines, strict adherence to the growth and development conditions of microorganisms is required. Each type of microorganism or virus demands specific conditions to survive and achieve optimal growth; therefore, microbiological incubators are essential for maintaining the most suitable and stable temperature, humidity, and other parameters. To meet these stringent requirements, BINDER microbiological incubators were selected for culturing and preserving beneficial microorganisms in the development program of the Covid-19 vaccine – Sputnik V.

With the proprietary APT.line™ preheating chamber technology from Binder (Germany), providing the highest temperature accuracy and uniformity for environmental simulation chambers. Binder microbiological incubators are the premier choice, contributing to the success of microbiological research in general and vaccine production in particular.
